Probiotics and Fermented Foods

I just finished one of our favorite probiotic green smoothies.  I figured it was time to write an article about probiotics.  So I did! This is not that article. At this point, if you are on this site, I am sure you know that probiotics are good for you.  My first shot at this post was to explain all the reasons why they are amazing, but it occurred to me when I was proofreading it that probiotics are pretty common knowledge.  So instead of a long winded explanation, I will give you the sparks notes.   They helps us digest and absorbs fibre rich carbs They control the growth of bad bacteria (candida) They boost our immune system, better yet they pretty much are our immune...

Toxins exist in our diet and in the environment. Detoxing is important, but please be careful! [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] In the holistic health word, the term toxin is thrown around A LOT.  It is used and abused everyday.  We are as guilty as everyone else when it comes to how often we say the word ‘toxin’.  We don’t want to be yet another blog dropping the term all over the place, #stopclickbait am I right?  I believe that if we use the term, we need to have...

5 Reasons you Need a Digital Detox

I am writing this after not seeing a screen for seven days. SEVEN DAYS!  My longest digital detox this yet! A digital detox is not a new idea, individuals and companies have been doing it for years now, but it is an underrated idea.  Here is the concept: you must go a predetermined and specific amount of time without ANY electronics.   When we really look at what screen time is doing, a digital detox seems a bit more tempting. 1. Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) CVS is a diagnosable eye condition.  It is caused by screen time.  Essentially what is happening is your eyes are performing the exact same task over and over again.  And while you are rarely required to focus further away than a few feet, you...

Hot and Sour Soup Recipe

This soup is awesome for cold day. The vinegar gives it a really great taste. Mushrooms are a source of minerals that we get nowhere else in nature so eat em’ up! As for what kind, we recommend shiitake.  Shiitake are super tasty, plus they are amazing for the immune system, and high in vitamin B and D.  Both great for brain function. It really is one of my favorite soups to make.  It is quick, easy and mega tasty. Prep: 20 min Cook: 30 min Ingredients 1 oz. (about a handful) dried mixed mushrooms 8 cups water 3 tablespoons sherry cooking wine (optional but it really POWS the flavour) 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons soy sauce (go for a good one though, there are so many preservatives...

Simple Sauerkraut Recipe

Sauerkraut is way easier to make than most people think.  It takes about 30 minutes to prepare and has to sit for 3-7 days.  We prefer red cabbage, or a combo or red and green.  When we were on the road, we made sauerkraut twice a week.  It is amazing with Japanese Sweet potatoes! Enough of the pre-recipe chit chat, on to how to make sauerkraut! Prep: 30min Cook: 3-7 days Ingredients 1 large head of red or green cabbage 1 tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon fennel 1 cup cranberries Instructions Cut the cabbage in half and remove 1-2 clean outer leaves. Chop the head of cabbage finely (you can us a food processor as well). With your hands, mix all the ingredients together let it sit for about 15 minutes Squeeze firmly to...

Beet and Turmeric Sauerkraut Recipe

While our simple sauerkraut recipe is really simple, so is this one.  There are few more ingredients however.  This sauerkraut goes great with sausage, but also it is amazing with fried eggs. Prep: 30min Cook: 3-7 days Ingredients 1 large head of red green cabbage 1 medium yellow beet (or 1 pear) 2 carrots 2 teaspoons turmeric powder (or 2 tablespoons freshly ground turmeric root) ½ tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar Instructions Cut the cabbage in half and remove 1-2 clean outer leaves. Soup of Health Recipe

This soup is good pretty much any time at all. It is pack full of vitamins, minerals, and fibre. If you are doing a cleanse then fibre is key around day two. Feel free to play around with the spices, the cayenne pepper is of particular importance when you are cleansing. One of the biggest perks of this soup is bio-availability.  There is an endless debate over which is better, cooked or raw food.  The answer of course lies somewhere in the middle.  Cooked is good sometimes and raw is good other times.  The reason this soup is called soup of health is because it is very easy to digest giving you a ton of vitamins and minerals without much digestive effort.  If you are sick,...

How to Heal a Broken Bone Fast

TLDR  of how to heal a broken bone at the bottom. Note that throughout this article I have linked to the products I use and recommend.  If you click on a link and buy the product I do get a small percentage. In light of recent events in my life, I have been forced to look more closely at bone health.  Which gave rise to this article! [caption id="attachment_3771" align="alignleft" width="200"] heal a broken bone fast[/caption] Britt and I were climbing and I was leading the route.  It was our last climb of the day.  I climbed up about 7 meters of the ground (about 20 feet) luckily not to terribly high, I had just clipped in my third quick drawn to mountain and was bringing the rope up to...

Kombucha Recipe

This recipe makes about 14 cups of kombucha.  There are a number of different sweeteners you can use for this, we have played around with all sorts from cane sugar, to blueberry based sugar to coconut sugar.  They all kind of work, but our kombucha always turns out best with just regular ol' sugar.  We aim for the organic stuff, but if cost is an issue non-organic is alright. What makes kombucha so great is how cheap and easy it is to make.  If you buy it from the store, one liter of it can cost as much as $14.00!  When you make it at home it costs pennies. There are a few places to buy a SCOBY (mother).  You can buy it on amazon, you can...

Yogurt Recipe

This yogurt recipe makes 1 quart.  Like kombucha, yogurt is easy to make and very cheap.  You can get a yogurt starter kit from most health food stores, but we usually recommend just buying a quart or more of good quality organic yogurt and using that as your starter.  If you are luck enough, you may be able to get some yogurt from a friend who has been fermenting for a while.  For some reason, if you have had a culture going for a while it seems to work better. Prep: 15min Cook (ferment): 10-20 hrs Ingredients 1 quart whole milk 1/4 cup plain whole milk yogurt.  Organic is best. Instructions Have a 1 quart container, or several small ones, ready.  Make sure they have plastic lids. In a large, heavy-bottomed...
