Beet and Turmeric Sauerkraut Recipe

While our simple sauerkraut recipe is really simple, so is this one.  There are few more ingredients however.  This sauerkraut goes great with sausage, but also it is amazing with fried eggs. Prep: 30min Cook: 3-7 days Ingredients 1 large head of red green cabbage 1 medium yellow beet (or 1 pear) 2 carrots 2 teaspoons turmeric powder (or 2 tablespoons freshly ground turmeric root) ½ tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar Instructions Cut the cabbage in half and remove 1-2 clean outer leaves. This recipe makes about 14 cups of kombucha.  There are a number of different sweeteners you can use for this, we have played around with all sorts from cane sugar, to blueberry based sugar to coconut sugar.  They all kind of work, but our kombucha always turns out best with just regular ol' sugar.  We aim for the organic stuff, but if cost is an issue non-organic is alright. Yogurt Recipe

This yogurt recipe makes 1 quart.  Like kombucha, yogurt is easy to make and very cheap.  You can get a yogurt starter kit from most health food stores, but we usually recommend just buying a quart or more of good quality organic yogurt and using that as your starter.  If you are luck enough, you may be able to get some yogurt from a friend who has been fermenting for a while.  For some reason, if you have had a culture going for a while it seems to work better.
